How to get your Free School Meal Vouchers - FROM 20/04/2020

Thursday 23rd April 2020

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you and your families are safe and well.

Unfortunately, there is currently a delay in the issuing of the latest batch of free school meal vouchers. The school has applied for the vouchers as instructed, but unfortunately the new national scheme’s system is taking longer than anticipated to process these vouchers. We are checking the status of the vouchers constantly, and as soon as they are dispatched we will contact you.

The scheme does not include Universal Free School Meals, which means that not every child in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 will receive the vouchers. Instead only families who are in receipt of the following benefits will:

  •  Income Support
  •  Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  •  Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  •  Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  •  The guaranteed element of Pension Credit
  •  Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
  •  Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
  •  Universal Credit - if you apply on or after 1 April 2018 your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)

We appreciate that this is confusing, as usually all pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 would receive a meal free of charge. However, this is not the case with the current means tested national voucher scheme.

Yours sincerely,

Mr S. Mason

How to get your Free School Meals Supermarket Voucher - BEFORE 20/04/2020

Thursday 2nd April 2020

Re: Free School Meal Vouchers

Dear Parents,

Very soon the school will be in a position to send food vouchers to eligible families to assist them in the current crisis. Any child who receives free school meals will receive a £15 e-voucher which can be used at a selected supermarket of your choice.

Free school meals are issued to parents who receive one or more benefits or means of support from the government, such as:

 Income Support

 Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance

 Income-related Employment and Support Allowance

 Universal Credit.

A full list can be found at:

Nationally all children who are in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receive universal free school meals. These are different from free school meals as every child is entitled to them, and therefore they are not linked to whether a family is in receipt of benefits. At present the local authority and the government are not providing food vouchers for children who are receiving universal free school meals. If this changes we will inform parents.

School staff will be contacting eligible parents by phone in the coming days to discuss how you will receive vouchers. For most this will be through their smart phones (I-Phones/Android). However, for those who do not have a smart phone we will be asking you to collect the vouchers from school.

We hope to get the vouchers to all the eligible families as quickly as we possibly. However, please be patient as we are having to establish a whole new system to delivering meals. Thank you for your continued support at this difficult time.

Yours sincerely,

Mr S. Mason

(Head of School)
