School age - when can your child start school?

Reception is the first year of primary school.  It comes after Nursery, but before Year 1.

Children in Birmingham can go to school (Reception) in the September after their 4th birthday.

Example

If your child was born between 1 September 2020 and 31 August 2021, they will be able to start school in September 2025.

When to apply

Parents can apply for a place in the Autumn of the year before their child turns 4 years of age. It’s important that you apply for a place as soon as possible:

  • attendance at a nursery class doesn’t give a child automatic priority for a place
  • don’t wait until your child is 5 years old, or your preferred school may already be full

You can list up to 3 preferred schools when you apply.

Secondary School Applications

You must submit an online application form by 31 October 2024.

You will receive an email confirmation that you have submitted your application form. Please ensure to check your SPAM or Junk folder.  It is important that you check your confirmation email to make sure everything is correct. You can amend your preferences right up to 11.59 p.m. on the closing date (31 October 2024). Click here for details on how to apply.

Waiting lists will be created three weeks following the offer of school places.  Your child’s name will be automatically added to the waiting list for any higher preference schools than the one offered (unless your child did not achieve a high enough score in the grammar school selection test).  Being on a waiting list does not mean that a place will become available.

Grammar School Admissions

You can register for the selective test for entry in September 2025, between Tuesday 7 May 2024 and 4:00pm on Friday 28 June 2024. Note that late registrations are not permitted.

The test will take place on Saturday 14 September 2024.

Wait for your child's test results before naming a grammar school as one of your six preferences on your online application.

If you submit your application with a grammar school listed and your child is not successful in the selective test, you will have reduced the number of schools you could have listed as preferences.

The Grammar Schools in Birmingham will send you the entrance test results by  Friday 18 October 2024.

Once you have received your test results, you should decide whether to name a grammar school as one of your preferences on your home authorities preference form, which must be submitted by the national closing date of Thursday 31 October 2024.

Pupils who accept places at selective schools in Birmingham will not be entitled to free transport from the local authority if an appropriate place is available at a maintained school within three miles of their home address.
