School age - when can your child start school?
Reception is the first year of primary school. It comes after Nursery, but before Year 1.
Children in Birmingham can go to school (Reception) in the September after their 4th birthday.
If your child was born between 1 September 2019 and 31 August 2020, they will be able to start school in September 2024.
When to apply
Parents can apply for a place in the Autumn of the year before their child turns 4 years of age. It’s important that you apply for a place as soon as possible:
You can list up to 3 preferred schools when you apply.
Secondary School Applications
You must submit an online application form by 31 October 2023.
You will receive an email confirmation that you have submitted your application form. Please ensure to check your SPAM or Junk folder. It is important that you check your confirmation email to make sure everything is correct. You can amend your preferences right up to 11.59 p.m. on the closing date (31 October 2023). Click here for details on how to apply.
Waiting lists will be created three weeks following the offer of school places. Your child’s name will be automatically added to the waiting list for any higher preference schools than the one offered (unless your child did not achieve a high enough score in the grammar school selection test). Being on a waiting list does not mean that a place will become available.

Grammar School Admissions
You can register for the selective test for entry in September 2024, between Tuesday 9 May 2023 and Friday 30 June 2023 at 4pm. Note that late registrations are not permitted. The test will take place on Saturday 13 September 2023.
Wait for your child's test results before naming a grammar school as one of your six preferences on your online application.
If you submit your application with a grammar school listed and your child is not successful in the selective test, you will have reduced the number of schools you could have listed as preferences.
The Grammar Schools in Birmingham will send you the entrance test results by Friday 20 October 2023.
Once you have received your test results, you should decide whether to name a grammar school as one of your preferences on your home authorities preference form, which must be submitted by the national closing date of Tuesday 31 October 2023.
Pupils who accept places at selective schools in Birmingham will not be entitled to free transport from the local authority if an appropriate place is available at a maintained school within three miles of their home address.
