Reception Admissions

Parents' Open Morning

Our open morning for parents considering admissions for Reception classes in September 2021 will take place in October 2020 and November 2020.

How to apply for a Reception place

Applications for entry to reception class in September 2020

If you have not made an application by 11:59pm on 13 August 2020 you will need to apply directly to the school from 1 September 2020 using the In Year Application form.

Applications for entry to reception class in September 2021 will open on 1 October 2020. Please click here for more information.

School age - when can your child start school?

Reception is the first year of primary school. It comes after Nursery, but before Year 1.

Children in Birmingham can go to school (Reception) in the September after their 4th birthday.

If your child was born between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016, they'll be able to start school in September 2020.

When to apply

Parents can apply for a place in the Autumn of the year before their child turns 4 years of age. It’s important that you apply for a place as soon as possible:

  • attendance at a nursery class doesn’t give a child automatic priority for a place
  • don’t wait until your child is 5 years old, or your preferred school may already be full

You can list up to 3 preferred schools when you apply.

Secondary School Admissions (for Year 6 Pupils)

You must submit an online application form by 31 October 2020.

You will receive an email confirmation that you have submitted your application form. Please ensure to check your SPAM or Junk folder.  It is important that you check your confirmation email to make sure everything is correct. You can amend your preferences right up to 11.59 pm on the closing date (31 October 2020). Click here for details on how to apply.

Waiting lists will be created three weeks following the offer of school places. Your child’s name will be automatically added to the waiting list for any higher preference schools than the one offered (unless your child did not achieve a high enough score in the grammar school selection test). Being on a waiting list does not mean that a place will become available.

Grammar School Admissions

If your child will be sitting the selective test for entry to grammar schools, we strongly recommend that you do not submit your online application until you know the results of your child's grammar school test. The test results for The Grammar Schools in Birmingham will be available before 31 October 2020. We are aware that with Grammar Schools in other Local Authorities you may not receive your test scores after the closing date to apply for your preferences (31 October 2020). However, online applications must be submitted by 31 October 2020 to be classed as on time.  Therefore, please ensure that if you are applying for a Grammar School in another Local Authority you include it as a preference on your application.
