At Greet our curriculum has been designed to give the children a strong sense of their own identity and their place in the world. Children need to know the story of humankind, its place in history and its impact on the future. Through our curriculum we ensure that children are ready for the next stage of their life journey. We provide a bespoke topic-based curriculum that meets the needs of all our pupils through broad, rich and deep learning.
Our programmes of study, concepts and aspects are broken down into smaller component parts to form a cohesive progression framework. The progression framework runs from Nursery to Year 6 and includes knowledge and skills that children need to know and be able to do in order to make progress through the curriculum.
EYFS
We believe every child deserves the best possible start in life and high-quality early learning helps to provide the foundation children need to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up. Children in our Early Years phase follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, which consists of seven areas of learning. Three areas are particularly important for building a foundation for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, forming relationships and thriving.
These are the prime areas:
• communication and language
• physical development
• personal, social and emotional development
We also support children in four specific areas, through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied. The specific areas are:
• literacy
• mathematics
• understanding the world
• expressive arts and design
Our EYFS programmes of learning involve activities and experiences for children linked to each of these areas of learning.
Key Stage 1 & 2
At Greet we teach a broad and balanced, knowledge-rich primary curriculum. We teach themed topics throughout the year. The content is delivered through a range of subject-specific projects, which last either a full or half term. These projects cover art and design, design and technology, geography, history and science. Cross curricular links are made for English. Programmes of study, concepts and aspects are broken down into smaller components to form a cohesive progression framework. The progression framework runs from Nursery to Year 6 and includes knowledge and skills that children need to know and be able to do in order to make progress through the curriculum. Maths is delivered through the Power Maths scheme and we use specialist schemes for computing, PE, PHSE, music and RE.
Children are taught about Citizenship and the Rights Respecting Schools Charter, these also link with our school values. Here our pupils develop their understanding of the world and their place in it both now and in the future. These lessons closely align to our school values and help our children become healthy, independent and active participants in society.
To ensure that our curriculum remains coherent, connected and cumulative from Nursery to Year 6 we have woven golden threads throughout. The aim of these threads is to help our children achieve academic excellence, practice social intelligence and live ethical lives. These golden threads are:
Humankind - understanding what it means to be human and how human behaviour has shaped the world.
Nature - understanding the complexities of the plant and animal species that inhabit the world.
Processes - understanding the many dynamic and physical processes that shape the world.
Place and space - understanding the visual, cultural, social, and environmental aspects of places around the world.
Creativity - understanding the creative process and how everyday and exceptional creativity can shape the world.
Comparison - understanding how and why things are the same or different
Investigation - understanding the importance of investigation and how this has led to significant change in the world.
Significance - understanding why significant people, places, events and inventions matter and how they have shaped the world.
Materials - understanding the properties of all matter, living and non-living.
Change - understanding why and how things have changed over time
